I guess only a Contractor (http://www.mycontractoronline.com/) can decide which one is the better choice :)

I would like to share my experience after buying the living HDB flat 4A model which is 7 years old. We thought building and flats looks fairly new, there won’t be much room for renovation…. Buying a fully renovated house was not of our reach hence we advised our property agent to look for a flat which should not be beyond 10 yrs. As per our spec our property agent managed to show few flats towards Red line (MRT) since it’s a place of greeneries’. We loved 2 houses but made up a chose which is on the high floor.

Since we didn’t had enough time & experience to scan thru the whole house, looking at the valuation report, photograph of the house and based on our initial visit we thought we will have to spend some money on interiors.

My initial concept was to get done-up with Kitchen cabinets alone; keeping this in view we went to IKEA Tampanies. After going there with house plan in hand we found we are really armatures, people were measuring the Kitchen cabinets and they were asking questions to sales executive. We were feeling complex to check with executive on what we want? Executives in IKEA are really smart, good and also promising, the executive we met Ms. Lim was very good, she educated on what are the things we should be looking at before going for a renovations. For instance measurement of tall cabinets, where should be the fridge, Kitchen sink etc.

The problem with IKEA is, they have standard cabinets which can be customized if the additional space is left out in your kitchen then you may need to lose the space, you may not be able to utilise fully. We gained enough experience going to IKEA after visiting couple of times, now we were a bit focussed and planned to go to renovators.

We had been to couple of designers hub to get the quotation, out of which we felt North west was the best, reason is – most of the time we used to go to interior house in the evening times around 8plus, in most of the places we found approach of the executives were not good & few places quote itself was very expensive. I found North West guys are more professional, one of the executive (Johnson) had visited our flat and explained us the condition of the house as of today, after renovations what will be the changes, I was very much impressed even thou my numbers were increasing, I felt it was still reasonable.

Frequent monitoring at what stage job is completed is more important, sometimes workers come from Malaysia they complete their work and go-off. If the done job is not upto your expectations and it inherits next job, it won’t be neat job.

Eg: Painting should be at the end, if electrician does the job after painting……. the piping’s will be projected outside and looks ugly. There is a process when to do what, I think renovator will explain.

Finally my little palace was completed as per our expectations. I am living now happily.

Please drop me a mail if any of you guys need any information.

Cheers,
Pradeep
